* Connecticut's counties are planning regions with no native escrow value; the figure shown is the statewide average.

Methodology

These figures come from mortgage-escrow data: when a homeowner pays their property insurance through an escrow account bundled with their mortgage, the payment amount is recorded, which makes it a direct read on what people actually pay rather than an advertised quote. The county values were compiled by Benjamin Keys and Philip Mulder in NBER Working Paper 32579.

The underlying panel spans 2014 to 2024, and the premiums shown here are the most recent year, 2024. Each county value is the median annual insurance payment for owner-occupied homes with a mortgage escrow account in that county. The national and state averages on this page are simple means across the covered counties, so they weight each county equally rather than by population.

One coverage caveat: escrow data reflects mortgaged, owner-occupied homes, so counties with very few such mortgages can be absent, and homes owned outright or insured outside an escrow account are not represented. We publish only counties with a natively measured value, which is why some states show fewer counties than they contain.
