What hearthmap is
hearthmap is a neighborhood research tool. It collects public data from sources like the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the Department of Education, Zillow Research, and others, and makes it explorable on a single map. Instead of juggling spreadsheets and portals, you can shade the map by a data point, filter for regions that meet a set of criteria, or rank places against your personal preferences.
Shade the map by any of ~100 data points, from median home value to crime rate to school quality.
Narrow the map to regions that meet your constraints: price under X, commute under Y, rating above Z.
Weight what matters to you and hearthmap will score every region by how well it fits.
hearthmap is a free research tool and is not a real estate brokerage. It does not list homes for sale, does not facilitate transactions, and does not represent any buyer or seller. The data shown is descriptive of regions, not of any specific property.

Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 21, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information hearthmap collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. By using the site you agree to the practices described here.
Information we collect
- Account information. If you create an account, we store the information you provide, typically an email address and display name, and, if you sign in with a third-party provider, a profile picture URL and a unique identifier from that provider.
- Saved content. Places and searches you save are stored against your account so they are available the next time you sign in.
- Location. On first visit we ask your browser for your approximate location so we can center the map near you. This is only used to position the map in your session. We do not store it. You may decline the browser prompt; if you do, the map opens at a default view of the United States.
- Basic technical data. Like most web services, our servers may log standard request metadata (IP address, user agent, time of request) for security and to debug problems. These logs are retained only for the time needed for those purposes.
How we use information
- To operate the site: signing you in, loading your saved places and searches, and rendering the map.
- To keep the service secure and to investigate abuse.
- To respond to you when you contact us.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data to build advertising profiles.
Third-party services
hearthmap relies on a few third-party services to function. Using the site will involve requests to these providers, each of which has its own privacy policy:
- Map tiles and geocoding. Used to render the basemap and look up locations.
- Authentication providers (e.g. Google). Only if you choose to sign in with one.
- U.S. Census geocoder. If you allow geolocation, we send your browser-reported coordinates to identify which state you are in so the map can center appropriately.
Cookies and local storage
We use cookies and browser local storage for essential functions such as keeping you signed in and remembering your preferences. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. On your first visit you will see a short notice about cookie use; once you dismiss it, a small flag is stored in your browser so the notice does not appear again.
Your choices
- Account deletion. You can request deletion of your account and the data associated with it by emailing us (see below). We will delete your account data within a reasonable time, except where we are required by law to retain it.
- Location. You can decline or revoke location permission in your browser at any time.
- Access. You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, and we will provide it or a summary on request.
California residents' rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), gives you the following rights with respect to the personal information we hold about you:
- Right to know. You may request confirmation of whether we process your personal information, and access to the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected.
- Right to delete. You may request that we delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
- Right to correct. You may request that we correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
- Right to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. There is nothing to opt out of, but you retain this right in the event our practices change.
- Right to limit use of sensitive personal information. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would trigger this right.
- Right to non-discrimination. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@hearthmap.app. We will verify your request using the account information we have on file and respond within the time required by law. You may also designate an authorized agent to act on your behalf; we will require written proof of the agent's authority.
In the preceding twelve months, the categories of personal information we have collected are: identifiers (e.g. email address, account ID), internet or other electronic network activity information (e.g. request logs), and geolocation data (only with your browser permission, and only to position the map). We collect this information from you directly and from authentication providers you choose to use. The business purposes are described in "How we use information" above. We do not sell or share this information.
Children
hearthmap is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be called out on the site.
