Niche is a school-and-place discovery site. Its center of gravity is K-12 and college: in-depth school profiles, letter grades, and more than 100 million user ratings and reviews. Place pages and Best Places to Live rankings exist, but they sit on top of that review graph. If you want to know what students and parents say about a district or a campus, Niche is built for that.
What hearthmap is
hearthmap.app is a free, data-only interactive map and recommender for deciding where to live in the United States, covering 100+ metrics including home prices, total monthly housing payment, property tax, homeowners insurance, natural disaster risk, schools, crime, demographics, and political lean, at state, county, town, ZIP, census-tract, and block-group resolution. It is not a review site and not a brokerage.
The map is the product. Shade the country by any metric, compare places side by side, or set your own weights in Match so every region is scored against what you care about. The same numbers appear on state, county, and town pages, and as single-metric county rankings.
Where they overlap
Both help someone who is relocating. Both cover home values, crime, schools, and demographics in some form. Both are free to use in the browser. That is where the overlap ends. Niche summarizes a place as a grade plus reviews. hearthmap shows the source numbers on a map and refuses to issue a house “best place” grade.

Niche’s advantage is people. A letter grade and a thousand parent reviews will tell you things a Census table will not: how the pickup line feels, whether the high school arts program is real, whether newcomers feel welcome. hearthmap will not. hearthmap’s advantage is the number itself, at the geography it was measured.
